Procedure Qualification Records

Test

PQR is the record sheet of the test weld details, it is the document that contains the actual values and supports the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS).

The WPS displays ranges based around the values in the PQR. The assumption is if you repeat the actions of the original weld, you will repeat the result. It is then known as a ‘qualified weld procedure’.

If you change some variables, the end result may be better or worse, but it is unknown, untested and unqualified.

A point worth noting. The weld procedure is to be the production weld, it is better to spend a little extra time getting the most cost effective welding procedure.

Example, you have to qualify a down hand weld using stick electrodes, and if you have a powerful enough machine is it better to use a large electrode that gives greater deposition. As opposed to getting a small ‘caddy’ and being restricted to small electrodes for your production welds.
